Advanced Breast Ultrasound & Its Benefits
Breast ultrasound is an excellent tool for women who are interested in holistic health and preventative breast care for several important reasons. It is a non-invasive imaging method that provides a detailed view of breast tissue, helping to identify potential areas of concern early—often before symptoms appear or changes become noticeable.
This technology allows us to see detailed differences within the tissue, such as distinguishing between solid and cystic masses, evaluating vascularity, and assessing margins and borders; important details that help guide diagnosis and follow-up care.
Ultrasound is especially helpful for women with dense breast tissue, implants, or prior breast surgery. These factors can limit what mammography shows while ultrasound offers clearer visualization in these areas. By using sound waves instead of radiation, breast ultrasound allows for gentle, repeat imaging without added exposure concerns.
What is breast density and why does it matter?
About 1 in 2 women have “dense” breast tissue. Dense breasts contain more fibroglandular tissue and less fatty tissue. This is extremely common and completely normal. On a mammogram, dense tissue is white. However, masses on mammography can also look white. This can make small abnormalities harder to see. Having very dense tissue can make mammograms less sensitive and harder to detect small cancers early.
Ultrasound gives real-time cross-sectional images and can evaluate a solid or fluid filled mass, its margins, shape, and internal structure-features useful for distinguishing benign from suspicious lesions.
Adding ultrasound to mammography increases cancer detection in dense breasts because mammography sensitivity falls as density rises, while ultrasound remains clear through dense tissue. If you have density, are looking for radiation-free options, or simply want greater insight into your breast health, ultrasound is an excellent and painless option.
On the top left image, the patient’s high breast density prevents the cyst from showing on the mammogram.
On the right, the cyst is clearly visualized on ultrasound as a black ovular structure.

The white dot circled in blue mimics cancer, which becomes less visible the more dense (white) the breast is on a mammogram.

Yes, at RadiantView, we offer Elastography which is an advanced ultrasound technique that measures tissue stiffness. Many benign findings tend to be softer, while suspicious findings tend to be stiffer. This technology can reduce unnecessary follow-ups, biopsies, and unwarranted worry for patients. Elastography can improve diagnosis confidence for physicians and adds a layer of information to better evaluate findings. The test is painless, radiation-free, and at the same time as your ultrasound.
Advanced Ultrasound: Elastography
“RadiantView™ is the only referral-free clinic in OC & LA County offering advanced breast ultrasound with Elastography.”
Elastography adds an important layer of insight by measuring how soft or firm a lump feels—information traditional imaging can’t capture. Generally, cancerous lumps tend to be firmer, while benign (non-cancerous) tissue is softer. By evaluating tissue stiffness in real time, Elastography helps providers see beyond the visual appearance of a mass.
This matters because stiffness offers clues about how concerning a finding may be. A soft result on Elastography can help avoid unnecessary biopsy, follow‑up, or worry in patients. And if a lump has increasing stiffness or changes over time, it may prompt closer evaluation. This functional information boosts physician diagnostic confidence, supports more informed decisions, and helps tailor care. The test is painless, radiation‑free, and performed during your ultrasound.

Above image: Both masses (dark grey)on the left look relatively similar. However, with the help of elastography, we see:
Top right: the red indicates firm, concerning tissue which was confirmed to be malignant.
Bottom right: the image shows green, softer tissue which was confirmed to be benign.
The bottom patient avoided an unnecessary biopsy.
